Parish News April 17, 2025 early edition
Holy Triduum (The Three Days): Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the three days of our paschal celebration, followed by the Good Friday Liturgy (10 am), the Great Vigil of Easter (Saturday at sunset at 8:15 pm) and Easter Sunday service (10 am). Tonight, the community will gather at 6 pm for a simple Supper commemorating Jesus's Last Supper with his disciples and his giving of the New Commandment. By the end of this service, all the symbols reminding us of God's physical presence will be stripped or veiled. Water will be removed from the baptismal font, and church bells will be silenced until the day of the Resurrection. You are invited to "watch with Christ" as he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane anytime between 8 pm and 8 am. Self-Guided Stations of the Cross: Printed copies of Jeff Krantz's revised version of the Stations of the Cross are available to anyone for devotional use in the sanctuary. As the author explains, "Too many versions of the Stations of the Cross romanticize Jesus’ suffering. Others tend to encourage us to identify with Jesus as the victim. In some way, he serves as a victim in our stead. This is not only theologically unsupportable in [rich and powerful countries of the West], but it is dangerous...This version of the Passion pulls no punches because it does its work in absolute confidence in the mercy of God. We have the courage to see ourselves as we are truly depicted in the Passion because we view it from the perspective of God’s ultimate victory over our sin, from the perspective of the resurrection." Ring the bells that still can ring (from Leonard Cohen's Anthem): If you are planning to attend the Great Vigil of Easter on Saturday night, bring any bells you have at home with you to join us marking the resurrection of the Lord when the Gloria in excelsis is sung the first time since Lent during this service. The Rector's time-away: Clarence will be taking some vacation time between April 22 - May 14. Please direct all pastoral concerns to Kerry Pope of the Community Care Team or leave a message at the office. The Rev'ds Jeanne Forte, Paul Guiton and April Stantley kindly agreed to offer Sunday supplies while the Rector is off. Thank you! |
